THE RETURN OF THE 9MM (OR WHY I HATE 40 CALIBER) POSTED ON 01/21/2016 BY TIM LAU

THE RETURN OF THE 9MM (OR WHY I HATE 40 CALIBER) POSTED ON 01/21/2016 BY TIM LAU

http://modernserviceweapons.com/?p=16507

One of the results of the fabled and oft studied Miami Shootout of 1986, where two FBI Agents lost their lives when attempting to take down two violent felons, was the conclusion that the 9mm round used by agents at the time failed to adequately perform its job to incapacitate its target. As a result, the .40 caliber round rose from the aftermath and eventually worked its way into law enforcement agencies across the nation, with the notion that it had the “capacity of a 9mm, and the stopping power of a 45.” But this alleged increase in terminal performance did not come for free. Over the years, the louder report and snappier recoil made it hard for many trainees and officers alike to have difficulty qualifying, the ammunition costs more (than 9mm), and there is increased wear on the pistol (as well as the hands and elbows of the shooter.)

1911s: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly By Melody Lauer

1911s: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly  By Melody Lauer

With a history of over 100 years behind it, the 1911 is as iconic now as it was when it set the standard for semi-automatic pistols years ago. For some, it still sets the standard today.

I have a special place in my heart for the 1911. It was the first gun I ever bought and carried. Over the years I’ve owned somewhere around twenty 1911s from Para, Llama, and Springfield to Les Baer, Wilson Combat, and Nighthawk Custom.  There were also a few Kimbers and Colts thrown in for good measure, as well as many sizes and calibers.

I have more books about 1911s than I do about cooking, which may or may not tell you something about my cooking. It is the gun I’ve played around with the most, and it is the gun that I have both loved and hated in the extreme.

You can’t journey far down the road of handgun shooting without becoming aware of this model, and many people find themselves compelled to try at least one.

The talk across gun counters, volleyed around the internet, and shared at gun ranges will keep the 1911 relevant for another 100 years, but before you dive in, there are some things you should know about our beloved John Mosses Browning’s design.

Reclassify the AR-15 to Non-Restricted - Petition to the Minister of Public Safety

Reclassify the AR-15 to Non-Restricted - Petition to the Minister of Public Safety

Petition to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Whereas:

The current firearm legislation classifies the semi-auto Armalite Rifle - 15 and variants as restricted when there is no inherent difference between it and that of hundreds or thousands of other firearms in Canada which have been, in due process, classified as non-restricted;

The restriction on the AR-15 and its variants prohibits the use of this semi-automatic modern sporting rifle from being used for lawful purposes such as hunting;

This rifle has been ultimately restricted purely because of cosmetic appearance of the rifle which does not make the rifle more dangerous. It has been assembled with modern day materials (plastic & aluminium) and that shouldn't be the merit to base a rifle for restricted classification as there are thousands of other rifles like it used on a day to day basis for legitimate purposes;

This rifle is the most versatile hunting rifle in the world. The calibre can easily be changed to meet lawful provincial hunting requirements from small game to big game animals without the need to purchase multiple gaming rifles; and

The Armalite Rifle - 15 was in fact legal to hunt with before the mid 1990's firearm classification changes and we hunters would like that opportunity restored.

We, the undersigned, Lawful Firearm Owners of Canada, request (or call upon) the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to Re-classify the Armalite Rifle - 15 back to non-restricted status so we can once again use this rifle to lawfully participate in the Canadian cultural practices of hunting.

One revolver 25 different cartridges in the .38/9mm/.357 ammunition range

One revolver 25 different cartridges in the .38/9mm/.357 ammunition range

The Medusa is a very unusual revolver produced by Phillips & Rodgers that have the ability to chamber multiple calibers in the same revolver. The Medusa chambers, fires, and extracts 25 different cartridges in the .38/9mm/.357 ammunition range. The obvious advantage of this is that the person can use the revolver for targeting shooting with a lighter and less expensive caliber and switch to a heavier caliber for self defense.

The reason why the revolver can use multiple calivers is because of its special cylinder. The Medusa six shot cylinder design originally was designed by Jonathan Phillips. He was also a computer specialist for NASA and a competition shooter and he regularly carried multiple guns of different calibers to the range every time he went to shoot. The Medusa was an attempt to solve this because most of the weapons he carried were in the 9 mm /.38 range. This does not include the .357 sig because the round is a .40 caliber cartridge that necks down to .357. To withstand the varying pressures involved in the various rounds, the revolvers cylinder is made with mil spec 4330 modified vanadium steel (the same alloy used in the Gatling gun barrels of F-16 Falcon fighters) and is specially hardened. This cylinder is about twice as stong as any other revolver cylinder on the market. The Medusa uses special rims and springs to hold rimless (automatic pistol) cartridges.
