One of the defensive firearms that has been a source of a massive amount of myth and misconception is the 12 gauge shotgun. Having used the 12 gauge as my primary long gun for high-risk work as a police officer for almost two decades, I would like to try to shed some light on reality versus myth.

First, I am not just “a cop who used a shotgun”. Those folks are often some of the worse perpetrators of fiction. I used a shotgun many, many times. I used them when most of my co-workers would not. If I had an inkling of high risk, a Remington 870 went with me.

Both Mils and MOA are an Angle. They were intended to operate as angles and while all angles have linear equivalents, when it comes to shooting there is no reason to use the linear value. We have moved beyond needing to figure the straight line distance. They were always meant to work as an Angle, so we need to think in those terms.

Instructors would immediately start off a precision rifle class and tell you;

1 MOA = 1.047” @ 100 yards

2.094” @ 200 yards

5.235” @ 500 yards

8.376 “ @ 800 yards

Who cares, immediately this is confusing, it has a lot of decimal places and lot of odd numbers in there.

Remington’s Canadian representatives, Gravel Agency, forwarded us their latest press release outlining Remington’s new limited lifetime warranty. Simply put, the warranty covers all Remington firearms purchased on or after January 1st of this year, but only for as long as the original owner possesses it.

There’s not much more to say, except to outline that we have confirmed that Gravel Agency will be honouring this warranty in Canada, so there are no concerns about cross-border warranty discrepancies.

UPDATE: The FBI’s solicitation for 9mm handguns generated a flood of questions from state and local agencies, many who carry .40, about the change. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of DHS, currently issues the Sig 229 in .40 but allows agents to purchase and carry 9mm Glocks.  ICE has a solicitation out for a new service handgun in 9mm. Some Army Special Operations Command elements carry the Glock 22 in .40.  They are currently purchasing the Glock 19 in 9mm.  There is no word as to the future of their .40s.  The FBI drove the initial move from 9mm to .40 for many of these same agencies.  As new details come to light about the FBI’s ultimate choice, expect more details here.  Below is a statement was prepared the FBI Training Division to answer those questions and was intended for dissemination to law enforcement agencies. It was not classified Law Enforcement Sensitive and has spread to civilians. I have confirmed its origin and feel that its release poses no threat to law enforcement while providing enlightening science, paid for by taxpayer dollars, to the public.

Some of you guys have noticed and commented on the fact that I’ve been using a Beretta PX4 Compact in a few recent videos. That might seem like an odd choice for someone previously dedicated to the Smith & Wesson M&P platform. I’ll be doing a detailed review of that pistol in the near future, including my reasons for the switch. But first I wanted to dig into the broader topic of double action semi-autos in general. The vast majority of new handgun designs today are polymer framed and striker fired. Pistols with hammers are a dying breed. In the video below, I give a quick history of how double action pistols came to be and why their popularity faded.
