Safe and Sensible Firearms Policies
August 15, 2014 Ottawa, Ontario Public Safety Canada
Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced the coming-into-force of the Firearms Records Regulations (Classification). These regulations, which are now in force, will require the Registrar of Firearms to keep a record of every classification determination, and prohibit the amendment of those records following one year after the day on which the record is made. In other words, one year after the firearm is first classified. For example, a record of classification of a firearm classified before August 14, 2013, can now no longer be altered. By preventing the alteration of records, the property rights of law-abiding firearms owners will be strengthened.
Quick Facts
The Firearms Records Regulations (Classification) will require the Registrar to keep a record of every determination of the classification of a firearm and stop arbitrary changes to records of classification.
On July 23, 2014, the Government announced the coming-into-force of an expanded Order Declaring an Amnesty Period (2014), so that persons in possession of a CZ 858 or one of the Swiss Arms family of rifles are protected from criminal prosecution and can fully enjoy the use of their property, including at the firing range. These regulations are now also already in force.
Quote
“My priority is keeping Canadians safe through sensible policies. Those who are in lawful possession of firearms no longer need to worry that they will become criminals overnight by the stroke of a pen.”
- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
