If you’ve ever considered getting a pump-action shotgun, then you’ve likely taken a good hard look at both the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870. When it comes to these companies and their shotguns, it’s almost like choosing between getting a Mac or a PC; there are die hard fans of each and, once you find what you like, you’ll usually stick with it. Me? I’m a Mossberg man, and I’ve had a Mossberg pump-action of some kind or another for the last decade.

My first shotgun was a Mossberg Maverick 88, and my first straight 25’s in both skeet and trap were with Mossberg pumps; a 590 Mariner and 500 field model respectively.  I certainly respect the Remington 870 and those that prefer them, but the Mossberg has never given me a reason to want anything else. That said, the Mossberg series of shotguns have some design peculiarities that are worth investigating in order to decide if it is the right choice for your home defense shotgun.

You always hear quite a bit about how rifles with mid-length gas systems shoot “softer” than the carbine length brethren.  I bought one of my favorite rifles more because of the basic layout, and I like the dude that came up with the concept of the rifle, Kyle Lamb.  It is a 16 inch Smith and Wesson VTAC 2.  It came factory with a mid-length gas tube.  I changed out the brake for a Surefire brake, and then I just added ammo.  The rifle has always shot like a dream.  Dot travel is minimal.  I can hammer quick splits into discreet targets at will.

Mounties will once again have final authority over the classification of firearms, the Liberal government says, reversing legislative changes made by the Conservatives allowing Cabinet to override RCMP decisions.

Police are the “experts” in these matters, Scott Bardsley, a spokesman for Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, said in an email Friday.

A new red rifle rears its head over the Canadian wilderness. The Chinese Type 81, after years in the RCMP inspection lab, has been assigned an FRT and is going to be imported in restricted and non-restricted barrel lengths. FRT #160486

Like the Vz58, the Type 81 is chambered in 7.62×39 and might resemble a Kalashnikov from a few hundred meters away. But this hybrid rifle is actually closer to the venerated SKS than the quintessential AK, and as a result has been deemed not a variant of any currently prohibited rifles.

The RCMP just reclassified the Akdal Mka 1919 from Restricted to Non-restricted! That’s right, the FRT has been updated and this mag fed shotgun is officially no longer an AR-15 variant. I can’t wait to take mine out into the bush and celebrate.

Edward, from TV-PressPass, announced on his blog that the RCMP have officially reclassified the Akdal MKA 1919 from restricted to non-restricted and is no longer considered to be a variant of the AR-15. He also notes that because the lineage of the firearm could be better traced to the AR10 design, and that because it is now non-restricted, he speculates that welcomed reclassifications of the AR10 platform may be in the works. With the advent of the Generation 4 Glock, I sold off most of my Generation 3 stuff.  I like the Gen4 better from several standpoints.  The dual recoil system, the addition of the texture on the grips, and the larger mag release.  I like everything about it.  I’ve lost count at the amount of 9mm and .40 caliber ammunition that I have sent down range since the Gen4 came out.  I convinced myself that the Gen4 shot softer, and that everything about it was better.But is it?
